I have worked as a Public Health Nurse in the Healthy Babies, Healthy Children Directorate for approximately 24 years in Ontario, Canada. My main focus was neuroscience and the development of babies and children. Over time I created a website called The Language of Parenting to support new parents-to-be through the process of birth and the challenges of parenting a newborn. I expected my website to reach more new moms and dads/partners. Quickly, through parent testimonials, I learned social media and medical websites were rife with misinformation, half-truths, and anecdotal parenting information that left new parents disappointed, confused, and unsupported.
Having facilitated many face-to-face prenatal and preparing-for-parenthood programs, I planned to create a hybrid program to support new parents with up-to-date neuroscience and hands-on nurturing parenting approaches. I found many sources of information, but there wasn't a source that connected all the dots related to nurturing and parenting a newborn. While searching for specific empirical, neuroscience information on newborn babies, I accidentally discovered Dr. Greer Kirshenbaum's book The Nurture Revolution, and an invitation to join a new 12-week Nurture Neuroscience virtual Practicioner's Program that promised a step-by-step approach to brain development and the art of nurtured parenting. I was so excited, that I went to my local bookstore, purchased her book, and signed up for the course that day.
The course with Greer and Rocio (both neuroscientists), has transformed my approach to facilitating prenatal programs. Previously, I centered on supporting families. now, it is all about developing nurturing family relationships, through respecting the interconnectedness and vulnerability of the child/parent union
Due to the Nurture Neuroscience Program, I have refocused my work with fathers. New fathers have long felt powerless and on the outside when parenting their children. Greer and Rocio's work lays down a nurturing pathway that new dads can follow and feel safe, less insecure about fatherhood and manhood, and more confident when relating to their partner and child.
The Nurture Neuroscience Practitioner Program is a way out of the jungle of parenting misinformation and Neanderthal parenting concepts. I highly recommend this nurturing parenting approach. May all couples considering conceiving a child soon, investigate this program and read The Nurture Revolution. You will be profoundly happy that you chose nurturing parenting.
